Mary Hannah Pallister [p.1.6.3.6.9.6]

Mary Hannah Pallister was the sixth child of Robert Pallister & Margaret Roscamp born July 12th,  1875 at Wrekenton & christened August 8th, 1875 at Eighton Banks, Gateshead, Co Durham.

In 1881 Mary, her 2 sisters & 3 brothers & parents were living at Boundary House, Gateshead.  Her father Robert was a blacksmith.

By 1891 Mary had left home & was now working as  a general servant for her father's uncle, John Pallister [p.1.6.3.11], a retired farmer, at  61 High St, Gateshead.

Mary married John Potts Marley in April-June 1897 at Gateshead.  John was born April-June 1872 at Gosforth, Northumberland, the son of Jane & George Marley, agent to Prudential Insurance Company.

In 1901 Mary & John were living at 37 Springwell Rd, Wrekenton, Gateshead & John was a coal hewer.  They had 2 sons at this time – Robert P (3) & George (1).

The family were still at the same address at the time of the 1911 census & John continued to be a coal miner.  As well as Robert & George there were 3 more sons- William (7), John (5) & Albert (1). 

John died in Oct-December 1917, his death being registered in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

The children of Mary Hannah Pallister & John Potts Marley were:

p.1.6.3.6.9.6.5  Albert Marley born August 20th, 1909 at Gateshead

Mary married again in Oct-December 1928 at Gateshead.  Her second husband was Elisha Potter, a coal miner.  Elisha was born c1882 in Esh, Lanchester, Co Durham, the son of Ann & Solomon Potter, a deputy overman at the coal mine.

Sadly Elisha was killed while working as a stoneman at Easington Colliery.  He & another man were caught by a fall of stone which proved fatal for Elisha, the other man escaping with a dislocated thigh.  (Sunderland Daily Echo & Shipping Gazzette, Nov 13th, 1934)   Elisha of 7 Glenhurst Rd, Easington Colliery, Co Durham, died on November 13th, 1934.   Administration of his estate was granted to widow Mary Hannah & his effects were £583.11s.7d. 

The 1939 register shows widowed Mary living at 4 Paradise Lane, Easington.  With her was brother Robert Pallister, retired coal miner & Mary’s son Albert, an unemployed general labourer.

Mary of 4 Rydal Mount, Easington Colliery died at Leaholme, Easington Village & was buried on April 2nd, 1947 at St Thomas, Eighton Banks, Gateshead.  Probate of here estate was granted to Joseph Gibson Nicholson, district council clerk, & David Nicholson, rent collector.  Her effects were £650.11s.7d.
